🎓 Moving Into Your HMO Flat? Here’s What You Need to Know

Helpful Hints for Students Moving into Shared Flats This Week
It’s that exciting (and slightly chaotic) time of year again — move-in week! Whether you’re new to Glasgow or just moving into a different flat, settling into a new HMO (House in Multiple Occupation) can feel like a whirlwind. To help you start the year off right, we’ve put together our top tips and reminders for making your move as smooth and stress-free as possible.
🧳 Before You Unpack
-
Check your inventory: Take a few minutes to go through the inventory list sent to you. Note any issues or damage and report them right away.
-
Take photos: Snap a few pictures of your room and shared areas as you move in. These will help if any disputes arise at the end of your tenancy.
-
Set up your bedroom: Make your space feel like home — bedding, plants, whatever helps you feel settled.
📦 The Essentials to Sort First
-
Meter Readings: Take gas and electricity meter readings the day you move in and send them to your chosen utility provider.
-
Council Tax: If you’re a full-time student, don’t forget to apply for a Council Tax exemption.
-
Wi-Fi: If Wi-Fi isn’t already included, get a provider set up quickly — these can take up to 14 days to activate.
-
Bins: Find out your bin collection day for your street using the Glasgow City Council website. Don’t forget to put them out!
đź› Maintenance & Safety
-
Report repairs the right way: Use our Fixflo repair reporting system for anything that’s not working — it’s the fastest way to get things sorted.
-
Smoke alarms & fire safety: All alarms should be tested regularly. If you think one isn’t working, let us know.
-
Locks & security: Keep doors and windows locked when you’re out. If there are any issues, we can arrange a check with Lock & Company.
🧼 Be a Good Flatmate
-
Share responsibilities: Set up a rota for bins, dishes, and general cleaning to avoid arguments down the line.
-
Respect shared spaces: Keep kitchens and bathrooms tidy — future you (and your flatmates) will thank you.
-
Noise: Be mindful of your neighbours and each other, especially during quiet hours in the evening.
